There’s something about the birds chirping and the trees beginning to bloom again that can give one the feeling of a fresh start. You begin to put away the winter jackets and boots for lighter options and keep the curtains open later to catch that last bit of evening sun. Spring is on the horizon and after a long winter (and a long 2020 in general) life begins to feel fresh and hopeful again.
The tradition of spring cleaning may seem like an overwhelming task. It’s hard to know where to start especially if this is your first big clean-up in well, let’s say a while. The hardest part is getting started but before you do that you’re going to need a plan. We’ve come up with the ultimate checklist for you to break down your spring clean and make things feel a little more bearable.
You’ve made it this far – check out our tips below.
Make It A Party
We’re not saying this is going to be the greatest party of the year (although it may be for some) but getting the whole household involved does make it a little bit more fun. Plan a day and tell everyone in advance to set aside 1 – 3 hours. Let everyone take their turn at choosing the playlist and get ready to make a day of it.
Stock The Supplies
You don’t need much. A simple all-purpose cleaner, detergent (dish and laundry. Yes, we’re washing clothes too) and a glass cleaner should do the trick. Make your own natural cleaner with a mix of water, white vinegar, Castile soap and a few drops of essential oils. Add to a spray bottle and shake before use.
Don’t forget a mop, vacuum, garbage bags and some rags (or make your own from old t-shirts).
Start With One
Start with one room, one closet or one area of the house and work from there. Identify areas that really need your attention and start with those ones first. Decide whether you need to organize and get rid of old junk or just give the area a good solid clean. Use this as a rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in over a year, consider trashing it with your local junk removal company (sentimental keepsakes not included).
Organize It All
Before you begin to organize, remember that everything that is creating clutter in your home can be put into one of four categories: keep it, trash it, resell/donations or storage. Dived that stuff into sections!
Once you have your four piles you can store or trash accordingly. Use decorative boxes for small storage and Rubbermaid-like containers for larger items. Use Facebook Marketplace or apps like Poshmark to resell clothes or household items then make donations to your local shelter or women’s center with the rest. Put everything away into its forever home.
Dust, Wash, Wipe and Polish
That was a lot of work but you’re already past the hard part! Continue on by dusting and washing areas like the kitchen cabinets, baseboards, and windows. Make sure you hit those bookshelves and harder-to-reach places. We guaranteed you’ll find some dust bunnies camped out and waiting for you.
Vacuum, sweep, and wash the floors once everything else is organized, cleaned and gleaming.
Remove, Recycle, Relax
One step left and you’re at the finish line. Pack up all of your trash and set it aside. Yes, even that old chair you’ve been meaning to get rid of for years. Pack it up.
